Austin, Texas

Date: (Sat) Jun 17, 2023

The Lone Star Region of Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) will sponsor a non-speed social road rally on Saturday 17 June to visit the remaining "Moon Towers" in Austin, Texas. In 1894 the city bought 31 of these 165 foot towers to light the city. Originally they had carbon-arc light bulbs that required a watchman to ascend to the top of each tower each evening to light the bulbs. The city was using electricity from their new power plant located where Tom Miller Dam now stands.Along the route you will learn more facts about the history of Austin.

The route will start from the Health and Human Services Winters Building Parking Lot at 51st and Lamar. Registration will be from 1:00 until 2:00 PM that Saturday with a compulsory safety briefing at 1:45. The final destination of the rally will be the Moontower Saloon at 10212 Menchaca Road, just south of Slaughter. At the Moontower Saloon, there will more discussion about the history of Austin, cars, and participants will be able to vote on the awards for this rally.

To participate, you must have a street legal car with a valid vehicle registration sticker and current auto insurance. The driver must have a valid drivers license and each car must have a navigator to read the route instructions and to look for clues about the route. To cover the cost of the rally, there is a $30.00, the same price for SCCA members and for non-SCCA members.
